Mulching

The Problem

Due to climate change, we are experiencing frequent dry spells where we go for extended periods without rain. As a result, we often have to water our plants more and more to keep them from withering.

Frequent watering can be expensive and time consuming. It also does not help us save water which is becoming a scarce resource.

Growing different kinds of plants in a climate where moisture stress is common results in economic, social and environmental challenges.

At the same time, soil degradation continues to be a major problem for crop productivity and climate change. One of the major causes of soil degradation is leaving our soil bare. Bare soil degradation is the process by which exposed soil is damaged by wind and water, which can lead to a loss of nutrients and organic matter. Unfortunately, bare soil degradation is all too common. We often see soil left bare from poor cultivation practices and clearing of vegetation.

THE OPPORTUNITY

One of the ways to combat bare soil degradation is to apply organic mulch. Organic mulch consists of plant-based materials which are used to cover the soil and protect it from the elements.

Mulching is a simple yet very effective climate solution. In addition to helping conserve moisture in our soils, organic mulching nourishes soil by adding organic matter and nutrients thus enhancing soil fertility. Adding organic mulch stores carbon in the soil thus helping us combat climate change.

Mulching also helps to suppress weeds by cutting them off from sunlight, preventing them from growing enough to break through the surface which reduces competition for nutrients and water.

Organic mulch regulates soil temperatures moderating extreme temperatures and creating a healthy climate for the soil microbiome. Lastly, organic mluch prevents soil erosion by keeping the cover covered.

Our Solution

Ecomulch Solutions collects and processes sugarcane peels and tender coconut husks into mulch which is then sold as an amendment to enhance soil and plant health.

We work with gardeners, farmers and landscapers to promote the wide-spread use of organic mulch. Along with mulch, we promote the application of compost to further enhance soil health.
